Short answer

Your IP address is a technical address for your internet connection. Websites, apps and servers need it so they can send responses back to you.

Why is my IP address visible?

When you open a website, your device sends a request through your internet provider. The server needs a return address to send the response. That return address is what VisaIP shows.

The address can be IPv4, IPv6 or both, depending on your network and provider.

Is the IP address my computer?

Usually no. At home, websites normally see your router’s public IP address, not the private address of your computer inside the local network. Mobile networks and company networks may also share addresses between many users.

What can an IP address reveal?

It can often reveal approximate country, region, city and internet provider. It normally does not reveal your exact home address or name, but it can still be privacy-sensitive when combined with other data.

Common questions

Does my IP address change?

Yes. Most home connections use dynamic IP addresses that can change when the provider renews the assignment or your router reconnects.

Can I hide my IP address?

You can hide it from websites by using a VPN, proxy or Tor, but your internet provider still sees your connection.
