Short answer

You can find your public IP address on a service like VisaIP. Your private IP address is found in the network settings on your device.

Public IP address

The public IP is the address websites see. It is usually what people mean when they search for “my IP address”. It is assigned by your internet provider or by your VPN service if you are connected to a VPN.

Private IP address

A private IP is used only inside your local network. It may look like 192.168.1.23 or 10.0.0.15. Websites on the internet do not see it directly.

Routers and mobile networks

In a home network, several devices usually share the same public IP through the router. On mobile networks, providers may use CGNAT, where many customers share the same public IPv4 address.

Common questions

Why do Windows and VisaIP show different addresses?

Windows often shows a private local address. VisaIP shows the address the internet sees from the outside.

Are IPv4 and IPv6 both my IP?

Yes. If your connection has both IPv4 and IPv6, both can be valid public addresses.
